Bio

Brent Miller has an international profile as a Timpanist, Percussionist and Educator.  His performances across the globe have been reviewed as “thrilling”, “impressive” and displaying "the utmost virtuosity".  His extensive orchestral career has included performances with the Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Queensland, Singapore and New Zealand Symphony Orchestras, the Malaysian Philharmonic, Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa, Auckland Philharmonia, Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra, Orchestra Victoria, Victorian Opera, Queensland Pops Orchestra, Philharmonia Australia and the YouTube Symphony Orchestra.  

As a chamber musician, Brent is a core member of Ensemble Q and Principal Timpanist of the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra.  He has performed with ensembles including Plexus, Play On, Cathexis, Early Warning System, Camerata of St John’s, Southern Cross Soloists, Sydney Camerata and The Lunaire Collective.

Through his freelance engagements, Brent has had the privilege of performing alongside artists such as Kristin Chenoweth, Idina Menzel, Diana Krall, Armand Van Helden, Tim Minchin, Sinead O’Connor, Hilltop Hoods, Kate Ceberano, David Jones, Lang Lang, The Wiggles, Ministry of Sound, Kate Miller-Heidke and Gurrumul Yunupingu.  He has collaborated with composers including Thomas Ades, John Adams, Unsuk Chin, Mark Applebaum, Mason Bates, Brett Dean, Elena Kats-Chernin, Catherine Likhuta, Phil Treloar, Stephen Cronin, Dermot Tutty; and conductors including Michael Tilson Thomas, Sir Mark Elder, Sir Andrew Davis, Charles Dutoit, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Simone Young, Xian Zhang, Tan Dun and Mark Wigglesworth, to name a few.

As an educator, Brent is an examiner for the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) and a member of the teaching faculty at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Griffith University.  He is frequently in demand for private tutoring, workshops and professional development sessions for teachers.  He has given masterclasses at the Melbourne University Conservatorium of Music, the University of Queensland and many high schools; guest tutored the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and is a long-serving tutor for the Queensland Youth Orchestras.  In 2017 and 2018 Brent was Head of Percussion at Sophia Mundi Steiner School facilitating ensembles, private tuition and designing curriculum for year level classes.  He currently teaches privately at Just Percussion and J Percussion Music School.  

In 2016, Brent was Project Co-Ordinator for the 2016 Australian Percussion Gathering.  

Brent studied his Bachelor of Music at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, graduating with Class I Honours and the University Medal.  His principal teachers were Tom O’Kelly and Vanessa Tomlinson.  Furthermore, he was mentored by and performed in masterclasses for the legendary Sylvio Gualda during his 2010 visit to Australia.

Brent was the first Queenslander, and first ‘first-year’ university student to win the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Snare Drum Award in 2008 and was later invited to record the test piece for the competition on CD and DVD release with Rhythmscape Publishing.  In 2011, Brent was chosen as Principal Timpanist for the YouTube Symphony Orchestra - one of four Australians to join 101 Musicians from 33 countries culminating in a concert at the Sydney Opera House conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas, live-streamed around the world to an audience of over 33 million.  In 2013 and 2014, he was invited to Italy as Principal Timpanist with the World Youth Orchestra (a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador) after the artistic committee of the organisation found his performances on YouTube.  In 2015, he won the hotly contested Brisbane Club Award - currently the only percussionist to win the competition in its 23-year history.

From Bach, to Boulez, to Basement Jaxx and beyond, Brent is passionate about expressing the musical capabilities of percussion instruments to the fullest degree through orchestral, chamber, solo and concerto performances.  Recently, 100 solo timpani compositions were written for Brent by composers around the world - this forms part of a Master of Music Research degree he is currently completing.
